Masks
Found Object Masks
This assignment entailed walking around campus and finding objects that could potentially be made into a mask. The professor had us gather materials, and once we were done, surprised us by having us trade our materials with another randomly selected peer. This is the result - my ‘wood-nymph’ mask made from painted burlap and some other unidentifiable material.
Horror Mask
Another student expressed her dislike for teeth. I thought it would be cool to create something seemingly normal but with an added element - in this case, two rows of upper teeth. This mask is a half-mask that attaches to the wearer’s ears and sits just above the jaw. The wearer can speak normally with the lower jaw exposed.
Re-Creation Mask
This mask is a re-creation of the Witch King of Angmar, from the Lord of the Rings. This was sculpted clay that was frozen to retain its shape without cracking. Warbla, which is a thermoplastic, is then stretched over the clay and takes it shape. I used a hot knife to do the cutting detail, painted it, and mounted it to a hood.
